25th April 2022
Welcome back after the Easter break! This half term, we welcome 6 new children and their families, some returning families and some brand new, its lovely to have meet you all before the holidays. The children have expressed such an interest in science activities through their sensory play, that this half term we have decided to look at “Space”. There will be a space rocket as our role-play focus outside, the children will have the opportunity to learn about the different planets, use size and measuring language as we look at the solar system, and compare sizes. We will have a focused week all around experiments. There will be some walks to use the school fields and take a look around our village. As the covid rules relax we are hoping to host a parent craft session after school to make things for the scout carnival in May.
We have a letter a week to start looking at the first phonic sounds the children will cover in Foundation. It is really helpful to look at items that support the letter sound in particular, rather than just the letter, for example think of the sound “s” in “snake’, this is what we are supporting the children to understand initially, rather than the “s” sound in “shark”. Why not have a letter hunt at home for each letter. We would love to have a show and tell with some of these items so please send them in their library bags. We hope you are enjoying using our library at Pre-School. Keep remembering to bring the books back to change each week. Older children will look at recognising their surnames for school as we begin the transition to big school, with some visits over to use the school playground.
We would like to welcome Miss Washington to the Pre-School team.

Week 1 – 25th –29th of April – Letter S
We have had a new trim trail installed in our outdoor space, which committee and parents have been fundraising for over several years. It looks amazing and I am sure the children will have a wonderful time using it this week and in the months and years ahead. So, a huge thank you for all of your support for our fundraising projects, as a charity we are constantly investing in the staff, resources and the building to benefit all the children that attend.

The children will have the chance to explore the space rocket role-play with lots of mark making opportunities through the week.

Week 2 – 3rd – 6th May – Letter A
Monday - BANK HOLIDAY - PRE-SCHOOL CLOSED
Tuesday - we will be going for a walk to the Junior school to make our own maypoles on the school playing fields.
Through the week we will have lots of different singing activities, we will be learning a song all about space, using instruments and exploring some sensory play based on some staff training the team have recently completed.

Week 3 – 9th - 13th May – Letter T
This week the children will be trying different experiments and exploring how materials can change state. The staff and children will create a volcano together and watch it explode. We would like to make lava lamps so will be collecting SMALL plastic bottles with lids, if you have any at home that you could bring in that would be really helpful.

Week 4 – 16th - 20th May – Letter P
Monday – after school we will be hosting a parent and child craft workshop to make headdresses for the scout carnival.
We will be busy creating artwork for the carnival around the “Street party theme” all week with the children. Parents are invited to help the committee to create the larger backgrounds (donations of large flat cardboard required please for this) and put it altogether on the carnival float, they will meet Friday evening and Saturday morning. There will be a Separate letter all about the carnival and how you and your child can be involved.
We will be supporting maths language – in particular using positional language as we create a route to follow around the village. The children will have the chance to follow the route on a walk on Friday morning.
Saturday 21st of May – Scout Carnival

Week 5 – 23rd – 27th May – Letter I
There will be lots of physical opportunities through the week to work as a team to build things, from dens to obstacle courses. We will go over and use the Foundation playground as well as visit the school fields to play some games on Thursday morning.
Sunday 5th June – Transport Day in the village, Pre-School will be hosting a car boot sale as part of the village yard sale, if you would like to book a slot on the Pre-School car park or hold a yard sale at your house and be on the map for the yard sale, please check out our website:
www.rollestonpreschool.co.uk  to book a place, as we are organising the map this year.
Pre-school - Re opens after the Whitsun holiday on Tuesday 7th June.
We have given you a few ideas of what we might do over the next few weeks, but we would love your ideas, and the children’s too. So, if you can think of an activity, song, story, anything that might work around our theme of “Space” please write them down below and hand in to a member of staff and we will hopefully include them in our plans.
